    Go for it 8A Unit 4 How do you get to school

    I. Teaching Aims:

    1. Knowledge aims:

     1) Words:transportation, mile.

    2) Sentence pattern:

     How do you get to school?            By bus and by bike.

    How longdoes it take to get to school? It usually takes about 35 minutes.

    How faris it from his home to school?  About 10 kilometers.

     3)Learn to talk about transportation.

     2. Ability aims:

     Practicing more to improve the students’ four skills and to understand the culture of the western countries.

     II. Importance:

     Continue to learn to talk about how to get to some places (different kinds of transportation, how long it takes to go to places, and how far away the places are.).

     III.Difficulties:

     1. Practice how to talk about the transportation in different ways and conclude different forms of the transportation.

    2. Help the students find out the right ways to study English in the future.

    IV. Teaching Procedure: 

    Step 1 Greetings

     Step 2 Warming up

     Ask a few students how they get to school in the morning and how long it takes?

     Step 3 Revision (Section A 3a)

     1. Help the students recite the passage with the questions.

     (If the students cannot recite this text, play the recording for help.)

     2. Ask the students to complete the questions and tell the class their views.

    eg: Why it usually takes about 35 minutes, not 10 minutes or 25 minutes. etc.

    This activity can help the students think more about the questions, find the right way to do some reading, and improve their thinking and reading’s skills.

    Step 4 Practice (Section A 3b)

    This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language.

    1. Use the sample conversation in the box and the information in the pictures of 3b to make their own conversations in pairs.

    Ask a few pairs of students to present their questions and answers to the class.

    2. developing (My design, not in the book)

    Give the students another 3 pictures, practice the target language in the third person singular form.

    eg: A: How             go to work ?

    B: He/She      to work.   (… by ….)

    A: How far is it ( from… to… ) ?

    B: It is      miles / kilometers.

    A: How long does it take ( him/her to go to work ) ?

    B: It takes           .

    Step 5 Listening (Section B 2a)

    Listen and check the things that Thomas wants to know.

    Step 6 Listening (Section B 2b)

    Check 1 or 2 how Nina gets to school.

    Step 7 Groupwork (Section B 2c)

    Ask the students to tell how Nina gets to school, using the words “ first, next, then, finally, ...”

    (Steps 5 to 7: these activities check students’ understanding of the target language in spoken conversations.)

    Step 8 Have a test I

    Use the real problems of test for high school to help the students know about test in the future and master the target language.

    Step 9 Have a test II

    Complete the following sentences.

    1. Most students go to school on the school bus.

    2. Many students take trains to school.

     = Many students ______ to school ________ ________.

     = Many students ______ to school ________ ________ ________ .

    3. Some students ride their bikes to school.

     = Some students _______ to school ________ _________.

     = Some students _______ to school ________ _________ ________.

    4. Some students walk to school.

     = Some students _______ to school ________ _________.

    5. It’s 5 minutes’ walk from my home to school.

     = It ______ me 5 minutes ______ _______ ________ school.

    6. Dave spends two hours playing football every day.

     = It _______ Dave two hours _______ _______ ______ every day.

    In this part, I use 4 sentences from Section B, 3a and 2 from Harbin’s test and Yancheng’s test in 2005.

     (Steps 8 and 9: a summary of this class with more practice.)

    Step 10 Homework

    1. Collect more pictures of transportations.

    2. Interview your friends and your parents about how they get to school.

    And give a report.
