                                      A
It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot coffee.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them coffee and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”   “Am I rich? Mercy, no!”
I looked at my shabby slipcovers (家具套).The girl put her cup back in saucer carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said “Thank you.” They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job----- these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought. Just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

Most of the young boys really were not too sure about what they wanted to be. But I knew exactly what I wanted to be, and when Mrs. Bolt asked me, I replied “A truck driver.”
“A truck driver?” repeated Mrs. Bolt. “Why do you want to be one, Tom?”
“Because truck drivers are always on the move. They do not have to sit at desks all day. They are out on the road and they see a lot of the country. The pay is good, too. And you never have any homework.” The class laughed.
“Well, Tom, ”answered Mrs. Bolt. “You certainly sound quite enthusiastic(热情的).I guess that you don’t like sitting at a desk or doing homework. Is that correct, Tom?” “Yes, I guess so,” I said.
“Well, since you are so interested in becoming a truck driver, I think you should look into the field a little further. I want you to go to the library and take out a book on truck driving. And I want you to write a paper on it and hand it in at the end of the month.”

Filling in company application forms can become a boring and repetitive task. Yet any carelessness on an applicant’s part can draw a negative reaction from readers. Each company or organization usually uses its own specially designed form that, although it generally asks for the same basic information, may vary in detail. Therefore the suggestions below apply mainly to the approach (方法) you should take rather than suggest what you should write.
*When visiting future employers, always carry your personal data record with you so that you can readily search for details such as dates, telephone numbers, and other useful information.
*Treat every application form as though it is the first one you are completing—write carefully and neatly. tx
*Use words that describe the responsibility and different aspects of each job you have held rather than list only the duties you performed.
*Particularly describe social activities that show your involvement (参与) in the community, or activities in which you held a teaching or coaching role.
*Pay particular attention of there is a section on the form that asks you to comment on how your education and past experience have especially prepared you for the position.
Think this through very carefully before you write so that what you say shows a natural progression from past experience to the job you are applying for. If you can , and if they fit naturally , add a few words to demonstrate (证明) how the position fits your overall career plan.
50.The first sentence of the passage means that        .
    A. You may have to fill in a long application form
    B. the filling up of an application form takes much time
    C. one may have to fill in many application forms before one gets a job
    D. application forms should be filled carefully, with no misleading
51.Although all application forms demand the same basic information,       .
    A. different companies may have different requirements
    B. different companies may take the same attitude towards them
    C. application may be required to answer all the questions in detail
    D. application may have to send in the forms by person
52.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Your personal data record is more important than the interview itself.
B.You should put all your personal data record in the application form.
C.Your personal data record will be of much help to your interview.
D.You should write your personal data as clearly and neatly as possible.
53.When writing about the duties you have been engaged in, you should        .
    A. put down the names of your colleagues
    B. describe the nature of the duties
    C. relate them to other major duties
    D. describe what responsible positions you have held
54.Which of the following would be the best TITLE of the passage?
A.Importance of Application Forms  B.How to Fill in an Application Form
C.Job and Its Application Form D.Nature of Application Forms
                                         D
Some of Beijing Zoo's animals are suffering menu changes because of the bird flu spread in Asia. Gone are the lions' and tigers' delightful "live" chicken dinners. In their menu, instead, are raw beef and mutton. While the lions and tigers go chicken less, the zoo's birds are also receiving some special and uncomfortable treatment these days. The peacocks in Befalling Safari Animal World, who used to be featured in the park and could walk around showing off their beautiful feathers, now are forced to stay in cages.
And turkeys at the Beijing Zoo--believed to be most likely to suffer from the bird flu virus—have been moved out of their old home to places separate from visitors. In most cases, display areas with birds have been closed for health reasons.
Yet a good thing about the present situation is that the living conditions of the zoo's birds are being improved, with keepers keeping the display areas cleaner and not as crowded as before. Almost all zoos have done more frequent cleaning and disinfection for bird cages--measures to prevent infection.
In this special period, pigeons (鸽子) are frowned upon. In Beijing, many homing pigeon lovers use balconies (阳台) to build cages for birds. Most neighbours are fed up with these cages since they can produce waste and feathers. Now the city's homing pigeon organization is asking all its members to stop letting pigeons out of their cages and keep cages clean. Still, pigeons and some other birds seem less lovely to people than before.
As a Chinese newspaper put it: “Doves, are you still angels?”
    55. Which of the following shows the menu changes in the Beijing Zoo?
    A. The lions and tigers have “live” chicken dinners.
    B. The lions and tigers eat raw beef and mutton.
    C. The lions and tigers have chickens only for supper.
    D. The lions and tigers have beef and mutton for part of meals.
    56. We can conclude from the text that ________.
    A. turkeys have been moved out of the zoo because of the bird flu virus
    B. peacock shows used to be free of charge
    C. people can hardly see peacock shows in the Beijing Zoo now
    D. homing pigeons are safe from the bird flu virus
    57. The underlined sentence in the text means“_____________”.
    A. pigeons receive the best care
    B. People are worried about pigeons
    C. people feel displeased with pigeons
    D. people show no interest in pigeons

If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and, as a result, we are growing old unnecessarily soon.
Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why quite healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a rather early age, and how the speed of getting old could be slowed down.
With a team of researchers at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages with different jobs.
Computer technology helped the researchers to get most exact measurements of the volume of the front and side part of the brain, which have something to do with intellect(智力)and feelings, and decide the human character. As we all know, the back part of the brain, which controls tasks like eating and breathing, does not contract(萎缩)with age.
Contraction of front and side parts—as cells(细胞)die off—was seen in some people in their thirties but it was still not found in some sixty and seventy-year-old.
Matsuzawa concluded from his test that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction using the head.
The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those with least possibility, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White-collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however, as possible to have contraction brains as the farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants.
58.What did the team of doctors want to find out______?
     A. how to make people live longer B. how to slow down the speed of getting old
     C. the size of certain people’s brain D. which people are the most clever
59.What are their research findings based on?
    A. An examination of farmers in northern Japan.
    B. Tests given on a thousand old people.
    C. Using computer technology.
    D. Examining the brain volumes of different people.
60.What’s the most possible conclusion of the passage?
    A. Most of us should take more exercise.
    B. It’s better to live in the town.
    C. The brain contracts if it is not used.
    D. The more one uses his brain, the sooner he becomes older.

    第三节
Recently we have had a heated discussion on whether people should keep pets at home in cities.
Some students think it's a good idea to keep pets because many old people who live alone at home can get some comforts from pets. Besides , getting along well with animals will make our life interesting. On the contrary the other students are against the idea. In their opinion if too many people keep pets at home, it's bad for the environment. What is worse, pets may make too much noise and even attack people.
I like animals, so I don't think it's bad to keep pets at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment.
