    第三部分 阅读理解 (共20小题; 每小题2分, 满分40分)
    阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
      A
When I left my backpack on a train, I lost my most precious possessions, a small framed photograph of my great grandparents, Emily and Gordon Baker. The frame was made of silver, with an elegant flower design in one corner. The photograph was taken in March 1939 on their wedding day. Emily looked very happy, and Gordon looked rather alarmed. A few months later, he was killed in action in North Africa.
I inherited (继承) the photograph when my aunt Mabel died. I'm a student at Edinburgh University and I lived in an old Edwardian house. My room has the most wonderful stone fireplace, with an elegant marble mantelpiece (壁炉台). The photo of Emily and Gordon had pride of place there.
At the end of term, I packed a large bag and a small backpack and set off for London, where I was planning to catch the Eruostar train to Paris. Minutes after getting off the train at Kings Cross Station, I realized that I'd left the backpack in the overhead luggage rack. I raced back to the train, but it had already left the platform.
This all happened several months ago, and I had become resigned to the loss of my most precious possession. Then last week, something extraordinary happened. I logged onto eBay and looked for a silver photo frame and I found it! The photo of my great grandparents was on eBay!
I called the person who was advertising it. He was a little suspicious (怀疑的) at first, and told me he had bought it from a stall at an antique market. After we talked for a while, he asked if there was any way I could prove it was mine. All I could think of was that the photo was taken in March 1939. He opened the frame and confirmed that this date was written by hand on the back of the photograph.
"It's definitely yours," he said. "Come and get it!"
    56. What was the author's most precious possession?
    A. A simple photograph of his grandparents taken by his Aunt Mabel.
    B. A special photo of his great grandparents in a silver frame that belonged to his Aunt Mabel.
    C. A wedding photo in a silver frame taken in North Africa.
    D. A pretty family portrait in a silver frame taken in 1939.
    57. According to the text, the author _______.
    A. put the photo in a small bag and left it on the train from Edinburgh
    B. left the photo above the fireplace at his house in Edinburgh
    C. left the photo on a train and never got it back
    D. left the photo on the Eurostar and ran back to get it
    58. Which title best describes the main theme of the text?
    A. Silver Frame Left In a Backpack
    B. Antique Photo Found in Edinburgh
    C. Lost Family Treasure Found On eBay
    D. eBay Sells Silver Frames
    59. The author was so excited when he saw the frame on eBay, he ________.
    A. called the seller and explained that it was a photo of his grandparents
    B. bought it immediately from the man advertising it
    C. proved it was his when the man advertising it looked at the date on the photo
    D. opened the frame and checked the back of the photo to prove it was his
      B
They're everywhere. They're on purses, clothing, cell phones and even DVD players. People just can't seem to get enough of their favorite cartoon characters.
    WHY CARTOONS?
Why are people so crazy about these animated (栩栩如生的) characters? "People think the cartoons are like themselves," said Evrita Wang, a student at National Kaosiung Normal University.
Douglas Holt, a product researcher, agrees. Holt says people express their identities with the products they use and wear. Some cartoon characters represent specific qualities. These qualities come from a story or idea attached to the character. For example, people believe Astro Boy(铁臂阿童木), a classic Japanese animated character, represents bravery and kindness. Consumers are attracted to these qualities.
    FOR ALL AGES
Children aren't the only enthusiastic consumers. For many adults, owning cartoon products is a chance to show that they are young. The Japanese character--Doraemon has childlike humor, but his innocence has gained popularity with people of all ages.
Owning products with animated characters can also be a statement of personal history. The characters remind adults of their childhood. Adults who grew up loving characters like Mickey Mouse and Snoopy want the world to know it.
    MYSTERIOUSLY CUTE
Most cartoon products have films or TV series to support their success. One outstanding exception is Hello Kitty. The cat's popularity has continued without the help of media. Sanrio, the company that owns Hello Kitty, keeps her personality vague (模糊不清的). This mystery helps the company sell more than 20,000 different Hello Kitty products.
Even though Hello Kitty's personality is a mystery, her cuteness is not. There may be many reasons why people love cartoon products. But the biggest reason is simple: They're just so cute!
    60. What's the main idea of the first paragraph?
    A. There're not enough favorite cartoon characters for people.
    B. Cartoon characters are becoming very popular with people.
    C. Some products are well-sold with cartoon characters on them.
    D. You can see cartoon characters every moment and everywhere.
    61. Which cartoon character has become popular without help of media?
    A. Astro Boy B. Mickey Mouse C. Hello KittyD. Snoopy
    62. Which of the following descriptions is suitable?
    A. Hello Kitty stands for mystery.
    B. Astro Boy is classical.
    C. Doraemon is innocent.
    D. Hello Kitty is not cute.
    63. Consumers are attracted to cartoon products not because ________.
    A. some products remind them of their childhood.
    B. they like the qualities that animated characters represent.
    C. the cartoon characters and consumers look alike.
    D. owning cartoon products can show they are young at heart.
    C
Britain is facing a sharp rise in its rat population as growing numbers of people throw away left-over food in the street, an environment group warned. Keep Britain Tidy said the rodents(啮齿动物)were stopping their traditional hunts underground and were roaming(徘徊)the streets, tempted by discarded burgers, pizzas and crisps. "The rat population is on the rise and soon it'll be as common to see a rodent on our street as it is to see a dog or a cat," said group Director, Sue Nelson. The practice of throwing away left-over food on the street rather than in the rubbish can-with young men the worst offenders-was common.
According to the National Rodent Survey in 2005, Britain's rat population has grown by nearly one quarter since 2000 and is now estimated at 60 million, two million more than the human population. On average a rat can give birth every 24-28 days and just a single pair of rats can produce a colony of 2,000 a year. Around 200 people a year get Weil's disease-an infection which can lead to liver or kidney(肝肾)failure and eventually death and which is carried in rat's waste. To highlight the issue, Keep Britain Tidy launched a cinema ad entitled "How close do you want them to get?" The ad gave a shocking image of a young woman sleeping in a bed of rats-echoing the nightmare scene from James Herbert's classic horror tale The Rats, in which mutant(突变异种)rodents begin to attack humans.
    64. Where did the rodents use to search for food?
    A. In the Street.  B. Under the ground.
    C. From the rubbish cans.D. In burger shops.
    65. What is the human population now according to the writer?
     A. 60 million. B. 58 million.

     C. 35 million.D. 2 million.
    66. We may infer from the passage that _______.
    A. Weil's Disease will finally end the world
    B. pizzas and crisps will become poisonous
    C. rats will endanger human beings' life
    D. young people are blame for the rat population
    67. By writing the passage, the author tries to _______.
    A. close some of the burger and pizza restaurants
    B. draw the public attention to the problem of rats
    C. prevent the rats from growing up
    D. making advertisement for the classic horror film The Rats
    D
I wonder about my Momma sometimes, and all the other Negro(blacks) mothers who got up at 6 a.m. to go to the white man's house with sacks over their shoes because it was so wet and cold. I wonder how they made it. They worked very hard for the man, they made his breakfast and they scrubbed his floors and they took care of his babies. They didn't have too much time for us.
I wonder about my Momma, who walked out of a white woman's clean house at midnight and came back to her own where the lights had been out for three months, and the pipes were frozen and the wind came in through the holes in the wall. She'd have to make deals with the rats: leave some food out for them so they wouldn't bite the doors or the babies. The roaches (蟑螂)? Oh, they were just like part of the family!
I wonder how she felt telling those white kids she took care of to brush their teeth after they ate, to wash their hands after finishing bathroom. She could never tell her own kids because there wasn't soap or water back home.
I wonder how my Momma felt when we came home from school with a list of vitamins and pills the school nurse said we had to have. Momma would cry all night, and then go out and spend most of the rent money for pills. A week later, the white man would come for his eighteen dollars' rent and Momma would beg him to wait until tomorrow. She had to lie to him that she had lost her wallet or the relief check was coming soon. Tomorrow I'd be hiding in the closet because there was only supposed to be two kids in the flat, and I could hear the rent man shout at my Momma and call her a cheat. And when he finally went away, Momma put the sacks on her shoes and went off to the rich white man's house to dress the rich white kids so their mother could take them to a special baby doctor.
    68. Mother got up at 6 a.m. every day, because _____.
    A. she had to cook breakfast for her children
    B. she had to catch the first bus to the factory
    C. she had to work in the white man's house

    C. we had done everything very well
    D. there was no soap or water in our home
    70. Why did the writer hide in a closet when the landowner came for rent?

    B. Only two kids were allowed to live in the house.
    C. They should pay more rent for two kids.
    D. There was only one bedroom for the two kids.
    71. What does the writer mainly tell us?
    A. Black people lead a miserable life.
    B. Black people don't have enough rent money.
    C. White people lead an expensive life.
    D. White people have special baby doctor.

The New York City Marathon was started by a man named Fred Lebow. It began in 1970 as a small, unimportant race. Only 127 people ran, and just 55 of them finished. They ran around Central Park four times. Few people watched them run. However, over the years the marathon grew and became more popular.
Today people come from all over the world to run in the marathon. Runners must be at least 18 years old, but there is no age limit. In fact, the oldest runner was an 89-year-old man. Recently, more than 27,000 people ran in the New York City Marathon. Large crowds cheered the runners and offered the participants cold drinks and encouragement.
The course of the marathon has changed, too. Instead of running around Central Park, the participants go through the five boroughs (自治区) of New York City: Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The marathon begins at the base of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Staten Island. The runners go across the bridge into Brooklyn. Then they go up through Queens and into the Bronx. The marathon finishes in Central Park in Manhattan. The complete course is 26 miles, 385 yards and takes the best runners less than 3 hours.
Although it has changed since 1970, the New York City Marathon is always exciting. Through the years, many unusual events have happened during the marathon. For example, Pat Tuz and John Weilbaker got married a few minutes before the race. Then they ran the race with their wedding party. Some people run the whole marathon as a family. Other people run the race backwards.
In the fall of 1992, Fred Lebow, the founder of the New York City Marathon, slowly ran his last race. He was very ill with cancer, but he did not want to stop running. In October 1994, Fred died. However, the New York City Marathon, and all its excitement, will continue for many years to come.
    72. How many runners didn't finish the first New York City Marathon?

    73. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
